The Basic Roles and Responsibilities of a Certified Nursing Assistant


The job of a certified nursing assistant may vary from one hospital to another and it may also vary with the patient. Some of the best areas to specialize as a CNA include hospitals, nursing homes, etc. There are free classes conducted by various institute for those candidate who are interest in pursuing their career as a certified nursing assistant and cannot CNA certification. Let us discuss some of the roles and responsibilities of a certified nursing assistant:

  • Taking down temperature, blood pressure, weight and pulse rate of the patients and preparing a daily chart of it
  • Collecting the blood sample and urine sample and sending them to the laboratory for performing different tests
  • Feeding the patients with proper and nutritious diet and health drinks as per the suggestion of the doctor/ dieticians
  • Provide oral medicine and keeping a track of it. Sometimes medicines and drugs are also given intravenously, if serious condition occurs.
  • Helping the patients with their daily needs such as tooth brushing, combing hair, sponge bathing, changing cloths, cleaning the wounded areas, spraying ointment so as to prevent from bed sores
  • Maintaining cleanliness in the surrounding areas as well as keeping the toilet clean. They are also responsible for the emptying the catheter bags and cleaning the bed pan at regular intervals of time.
In nut shell, CNA is responsible for the overall development of the patients who are going under treatment procedure.
